The rules for visiting a prison in Oklahoma have changed. Effective December 1st of 2025, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections has taken the task of scheduling and approving family visitation away from individual facilities, and assigned it to a state office. So what does this mean for families of inmates who are used to doing it the old fashioned way? How does Oklahoma prison visitation work now?
The new system, which heavily favors the tech-savvy visitor, can be tricky to navigate. We can walk you through step-by-step from how to get approved to visit an inmate, through scheduling prison visitation, to what to expect when visiting an incarcerated loved one. Become an Approved Visitor with a Visitor Application Form for Oklahoma State Prisons
Before you visit a state prison, your first stop will be the Oklahoma DOC website. People of all ages can visit the correctional facility. Yes, even small children and babies are allowed in the prison visitation center. If you are over 18, you must provide government identification and submit to a background check. You should also be prepared to answer some questions about your relationship to the inmate and your living situation. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian who is approved for visitation, and may not be admitted without proof of ID and guardianship. Documents for minor children visiting prisons must be provided by the accompanying adult visitor.
Important: All visitors must submit a Visitor Application Form.
Paper visitation application forms will still be accepted at ODOC headquarters in Oklahoma City. The form must be addressed to the Visitation Unit, not the inmate.

Oklahoma City, OK 73136-0400Background checks are required for those 18 and older, and the inmate will notify you when the process is complete. Approval can take up to eight weeks. The inmate will also notify you of the scheduled date and time of visitation.
Visitors bringing minors must provide documentation (e.g., birth certificates or court/adoption papers) to verify guardianship. Once a child turns 18, they must complete a visiting application.

The following information about oneself must be provided for the purpose of identifying the visitor and performing the required background check.
- Images of the FRONT AND BACK of your Driver’s License or State ID Card
- Your full legal name (first name, last name, and middle initial)
- Your birth date and place of birth
- Your social security number
- Your height, weight, race, and gender
- Your full residential address
- Your mailing address
- Your telephone number
- The make, model, and license plate number OF THE VEHICLE IN WHICH YOU WILL ARRIVE
- Your driver’s license number, its expiration date, and the state in which it was issued
- Your legal signature (including qualifying e-signature, if applicable)
Required Information ABOUT THE INCARCERATED INDIVIDUAL For Your Visitor Application
Likewise, information to identify the person in prison is also required. If you don’t know this information already, you can find it by searching their first and last name using the “Offender Lookup” tool at OkOffender.DOC.ok.gov, or by asking the individual directly. Tip: Only sites with a “.gov” domain name are official government websites. Beware of copycats!
- Their first name, last name, and ODOC number
- The name of the prison facility
Note: Though the application does not ask their bunk and unit number, you will need that information later when you schedule a visitation date.
Other Required Information For Your Visitor Application
You can expect to be asked several other personal questions as part of the application process. You answers here are subject to being verified, and are required for a number of reasons such as ensuring that approval of your visitation is lawful and compliant. Though it may seem that the questions are invasive or threatening, dishonesty is not recommended. You may not leave any fields blank, or else your application may be rejected.
- The name, address, and telephone number for your employer
- Your occupation
- How long you have known the inmate, and how you are related
- Whether you or any family have worked for (or volunteered at) an Oklahoma prison INCLUDING PRIVATE PRISONS
- Whether you are communicating with or visiting any other inmates in Oklahoma
- Your marital status
- Whether you or any other family have ever been arrested or incarcerated
- Whether you have ever been suspended from prison visitation
- Your attestation that you have read and understand the form you have filled out, and answered all questions truthfully
Note: The application does not ask any questions regarding minor children, or require you to state whether you intend to accompany a minor in the future. If you do decide to accompany a minor, you will need their information later when you schedule a visitation date.
Conjugal Visits in Oklahoma
Approval for conjugal visits or private family visitation is a topic that sometimes comes up. As of 2026, in Oklahoma state prisons, these kinds of visits are not allowed. All visitation is monitored by facility staff, and visits are typically held in a communal space alongside other visitors.
If You Are Already An Approved Visitor For Your Incarcerated Loved One
If you have already been approved for inmate visitation, the good news is that you do not need to file another visitation application, until it’s time to renew your existing one. Applications for inmate visitation must be renewed every three years. If yours is coming due soon, you can no longer send any paper applications to the prison itself. Instead, all applications for visitation must be addressed to the central visitation office in Oklahoma City. You may also have the option of filling out your application online.
Scheduling a Visit to an Oklahoma Prison
All visitors are strongly encouraged to used the ODOC VISITOR SCHEDULE REQUEST FORM from the oklahoma.gov website to schedule a facility visit, if they have the ability to do so. This makes the whole process quicker, easier, and more traceable. If you fill out the online form to schedule your prison visitation, you can have a copy of your response emailed to you, and there’s no need to wait for someone to call you back before you submit information.
If you are unable to use the online form, you can still call the Visitation Unit at (405) 768-3269 and ask for help scheduling a visit to the facility. You may also call this number with any questions you may have regarding visitation. If you call Oklahoma’s Visitation Unit phone number, you will most likely be prompted to leave a message with your name and number. Be aware that this is a state-wide office, and that calls are answered an returned by persons in multiple locations and facilities. It may be several days before someone calls you back, and you may not recognize the number they call from.
Note: If you’re expecting a call from the Visitation unit, watch the phone for any unknown callers, and answer the phone, even if you don’t recognize the number. Oklahoma’s Visitation Unit does not call from the same number every time. If you miss your call, you could miss your visit!
Visitation Hours
The days on which the visitation center is open will vary by facility, but must include Saturday, Sunday and all State Recognized Holidays. ODOC is now enacting standardized visitation hours at all facilities beginning at 9:00 AM. How long the visit may last depends one the security level of the facility, and on your loved one’s Earned Credit Level, which is can range from 1 at the lowest to 4 at the highest. As of 2026, this is how much visit time each credit level is allowed, per week, at each security level.

- Level 2 – 2 hours
- Level 3 – 3 hours

- Level 1 – 1 hour (non contact)

Additional Visits for State Holidays
Extra visitation days are allowed on Oklahoma state holidays, as long as they don’t fall on a weekend. Even if you already have a visit scheduled for that week, you may schedule a second one for the state holiday. Some facilities have rules against booking two consecutive visit days in a row, but state holidays are intended to be an exception. If you visited your loved one on Sunday, for example, you should still be allowed to visit him on Memorial Day.
State holiday visits should be scheduled the week before they occur. Be sure to ask your facility whether they have special hours of operation for holidays, before you schedule. These are the state holidays for Oklahoma:
